International exchange on key technologies
The event brought together leading research institutes involved in the development of the Einstein Telescope and specialised industrial companies from across Europe. The focus was on key technological challenges, particularly in the fields of vacuum and cryogenic systems – essential components for the operation of such highly sensitive infrastructures. For KARL HUGO, the workshop provided a valuable opportunity for exchange: discussions with international experts, insights into current developments, and reflections on future requirements shaped the two intensive days at CERN. At the same time, the event opened up new perspectives for potential collaborations and partnerships in this specialised environment.
The Einstein Telescope: next-generation research
At the centre of the discussions was the Einstein Telescope itself. This future underground detector is designed to measure gravitational waves with unprecedented precision. Its objective is to make physical phenomena observable that have so far remained beyond our measurement capabilities.Several European regions are currently competing to host this large-scale project, including the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. A decision is expected in the coming years.
A strategic environment for industry
Projects such as the Einstein Telescope are part of what is known as “Big Science”: large-scale international research infrastructures that can only be realised through close collaboration between science, industry, and public institutions. They require the highest levels of technology, precision, and reliability, while also opening up new fields of innovation for specialised industrial companies. For KARL HUGO, participating in this workshop went far beyond a technical exchange. It was a strategic step to strengthen its positioning in this demanding environment, to anticipate technological developments, and to actively contribute to future projects.
Our objective is clear: we aim to apply our engineering expertise where technological boundaries are being pushed, establishing ourselves as a reliable partner in international high-tech projects.
